As we start into our new fiscal year, we'd like
to thank you for helping Northwest Youth Corps
with our new website, especially
with helping to set up the VISA, and alumni page,
and helping to fine tune the whole website. We
understand you contributed many hours of work
above what we were charged for, and we are pleased
to list PacInfo as a program supporter in NYC's
Annual Report and other publications.
The year 2003 is a special one for us, for NYC
turned 20 years old! This year we served 972 youth,
an increase of 115 youth over
last year! Your beautiful improved website
you created for us saves paper, postage, and staffing
by allowing youth to directly email in their application
to the office. As of October 2002, NYC recruited
11% of its participants through its website. Less
than one year later, staff estimates that NYC
received 92% of its applications electronically.
Together, these youth worked on 65 crews and carried
out over 300 crew weeks of work in Oregon, and
another 100 weeks across the Northwest. During
one week alone, crews worked in:
- Lakeview Ranger District - trails and pruning
- Diamond Lake - hazardous fuels reduction
- Roseburg BLM -pruning and pruning
- Smith Rock State Park - trails and pruning
- Sumpter Valley - trails and pruning
- Beazell Memorial Park - establishment of new
County Park
- Coos Bay BLM - trails and pruning
- Illinois Valley - trails and pruning
- Leavenworth Ranger District - trails and pruning
- West Eugene Wetlands - noxious weed removal
and trail
- Crews were also busy in Chelan, Iron Goat
Trail, Siskiyou National Forest, and Idaho.
This summer, our YouthWorks program offered education,
job training and a stipend of 150 Lane County
youth ages 11-15. This weekend, September 13,
about 80 youth will enter our five week long Fall
Conservation Corps program. Thank you
again for you support of NYC and our region's
young people!
Sincerely,
Natalie Whitson
